Milan: A Quick Guide

Milan Duomo
Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, is a vibrant city and can be easily covered in a few days. Oftentimes, airlines, such as Emirates, run deals to travel there for cheap (i.e. less than $500 per person). My sister and I have taken advantage of this in the past by booking a trip to Milan for a long weekend. Here is a quick guide to Milan for those of you who decide to do the same!

Fly

Every good thing you might have heard about Emirates is true. The service was impeccable, the food was great, and the aircraft was beautiful. I snapped a quick shot of the twinkling stars covering the ceiling of the plane during my red-eye flight before dozing off.

See

The Duomo
One of the most beautiful cathedrals that I have seen, the Duomo in Milan cannot be missed. Visit early in the morning to beat the crowds, but if you can’t, try the ticket booths behind the Duomo for shorter lines.
Sforza Castle
One of the largest citadels in Europe, the Sforza Castle now contains seven different museums. It is a repository of Milan’s cultural and civic history, and it is home to Michelangelo’s final work, the Rondanini Pietà.

Eat

Aperitivo
T and I dined like queens during aperitivo, the Milanese tradition of pre-dinner drinks accompanied by complimentary or appetizers. Our favorite area was in the Brera district, where charming pedestrianized streets are lined with restaurants and bars offering different aperitivo options.

Gelato
My favorite spot in Milan for gelato was Cioccolati Italiani. They fill the cones with chocolate before adding scoops of delicious gelato on top. Don’t let the long lines scare you though! It was worth the wait.

Stay

Hotel Gran Duca di York – During our trip we stayed at the Hotel Gran Duca di York, which was situated a short distance to the Duomo. It was in a great location for exploring the city and reasonably priced.

Other great options include:

Westin Palace Milan – A good option for those looking to earn or use SPG points, located close to the train station and a nice running route.

Park Hyatt Milan – Have some free nights from opening a Hyatt credit card to use? This is an excellent, upscale option that is centrally located near the Duomo and shopping.

Shop

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
One of the world’s oldest shopping malls, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II houses a plethora of high-end restaurants and shops.
