Airbnb has emerged as one of the most popular ways to book travel accommodations. With over 1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 190 countries, Airbnb provides access to a variety of lodging options around the world. However, it can be challenging to wade through all the options to find exactly what you’re looking for. Here are a few tips on how to find the perfect Airbnb rental.
1. Search in advance
Like most other accommodations, Airbnb rentals book up the closer to your reservation date. Be sure to plan ahead and search for a place to stay for maximum availability and the lowest prices.
2. Narrow down the neighborhoods
Do you prefer staying close to the action or in a quieter area? Figure out where you want to stay and search for listings only in that particular neighborhood, otherwise you’ll risk being overwhelmed with all of the options!
3. Use Google Street View to explore the surroundings
For security reasons, Airbnb won’t release the actual address of the rental listing. However, you can get a good idea of the property and surroundings by using Google Street View. Doing this, you can find answers to many questions: Is this rental located on a busy street? Are there restaurants and bars nearby? Is there street parking? What are the sidewalks and walking paths like? I always use this tool to get an idea of where I’m staying, and you should too!
4. Read the reviews
You increase the chances of snagging the perfect Airbnb rental by staying at a place that has earned stellar reviews in the past. Look for rentals with high ratings, and read the reviews to learn additional details about the property (i.e. Was the wi-fi working? Was the rental clean and tidy?)
5. Make sure the listing is up-to-date
It’s heartbreaking when you find the perfect listing and you think it’s available only to find out the host has not updated the availability calendar for months! Make sure the listing you are looking at reflects the latest information available by checking to see if the host updated the calendar recently.
6. Understand all the terms of the rental
Carefully read all the house rules laid out by the host. Check-in and check-out times may be more or less stringent than traditional hotels, an oftentimes Airbnb rentals have stricter cancellation policies. If you have any questions, reach out to the host to clear it all up beforehand. Make sure you understand all of the terms before booking.
